Methodology
Every number on this site is derived from a company's own quarterly results, filed in XBRL with the exchanges. Here is exactly what we read, what we compute, and what we deliberately leave out.
Where the data comes from
Listed companies in India must file their quarterly financial results with NSE and BSE in a structured XBRL format. Since April 2017 these filings are mandatory, and companies that operate in more than one line of business must disclose segment-wise revenue and results under Ind AS 108 — Operating Segments. Paisa Trail reads those segment disclosures directly from the primary filing. We do not use broker estimates, scraped price data, or third-party datasets.
What we compute
- Segment share
- A segment's revenue as a percentage of the sum of all reported segment revenues for that quarter. This is what the revenue-anatomy strip shows.
- Operating margin
- Operating profit ÷ revenue, from the figures in the results statement.
- Segment margin
- A segment's result (its profit/loss before interest and tax, as the company reports it) ÷ that segment's revenue. Shown as “—” where a company does not disclose a segment result.
Units and scale
All figures are shown in ₹ crore with Indian digit grouping. XBRL facts are reported in full rupees, which we divide by 1,00,00,000 (one crore). A small number of filers report in lakhs instead; where we detect that, we normalise before display. If a figure ever looks off by a factor of ~100, that is the likely cause — please flag it.
Consolidated vs standalone
Where a company files both, we prefer the consolidated results, since those reflect the group including subsidiaries — the more faithful picture of how the whole business makes money.
What this is not
- Not a forecast — every figure is a reported historical fact, not an estimate.
- Not adjusted or “normalised” earnings — we show what the company filed.
- Not investment advice, and not a stock screener. The question we care about is “what does this company do, and how does it make money?”, not where the share price is going.
Known limitations
- Companies with a single line of business report one segment, so there is no revenue split to show.
- Banks and insurers use a different taxonomy (they report “Income”, not “Revenue from operations”); we are still widening coverage of those tags.
- The site refreshes monthly, so figures reflect the most recent filing we have processed, not necessarily the very latest announcement.
Sample data notice
This preview is currently showing built-in sample data for a handful of companies so the site renders before a live fetch. Sample figures are illustrative and must not be relied upon.
Sources & attribution
Underlying disclosures are filed by companies with NSE and BSE under the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations. Paisa Trail performs its own parsing, normalisation and presentation of those public filings and attributes them as the source. Public availability of a filing does not by itself grant rights to redistribute exchange datasets; we treat the filings as primary-source inputs rather than republishing exchange data wholesale.
